Washington banned use of cancer-causing chemicals in makeup, hair care

The legislation prohibits the production, distribution, and sale of cosmetic items that contain nine substances or groups of compounds, and it orders Ecology to investigate the risks of potential replacement ingredients.

Additionally, the department is interested in hearing from the public regarding restrictions on harmful compounds like phthalates, per- and polyfluorinated chemicals, and other chemicals used in electronics, vinyl flooring, and beverage packaging. These substances are recognised to be unhealthy for people because they can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat and cause rashes, shortness of breath, wheezing, and lung function problems. Lead exposure can retard a child's growth and have an impact on their speech, hearing, and learning. It can also harm an adult's kidneys and brain.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl compounds, also known as "forever chemicals," are among the most prevalent pollutant sources on the globe. Lead, cadmium, and certain ortho-phthalates are prohibited in children's items under Washington's Children's Safe Product Act.

The United States does not have a regulation requiring cosmetic makers to report safety information on cosmetic ingredients. In other products, many of these compounds are already subject to regulation.
