The New Zealand's Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has banned the use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in cosmetic products from 31 December 2026, marking a significant step towards environmental protection. PFAS are used in products like nail polish, shaving cream, foundation, lipstick, and mascara to make products more durable and water-resistant. The EPA's decision is part of an ongoing response to potential risks from PFAS, which are found in a small number of products. The Cosmetic Products Group Standard has been updated to ensure cosmetic products are safe and align with international developments. The EPA received 20 submissions from the cosmetics industry.
