Turkey: Cosmetic Product Advertisement Guidance

News Date
January 17, 2023

Ads for cosmetic items frequently make exaggerated claims in an effort to draw attention to the products, market them, and persuade consumers to buy them. As a result, the special laws governing advertisements for cosmetics are regulated.

Cosmetic product advertisements ought to be created primarily in accordance with the rules governing advertisements and product promotions, such as the Law on the Protection of Consumers, Law on the Commercial Advertisement and Unfair Commercial Practices, and Regulation on Commercial Advertisement and Unfair Commercial Practices, with number 6502. Cosmetic ads should also adhere to any laws that are specifically regulated for the advertisements and promotions of cosmetic products, such as Cosmetic Law No. 5324.

The claims made in the advertisements must be true, verifiable, and appropriately reflect the characteristics of the product.

The Health Claim Regulation prohibits the use of phrases like "treating or avoiding any disease," "diagnosing a disease," and "diagnosing or repairing a physiological function" in advertisements for cosmetic products.
