EU: SCCS publishes preliminary opinion on Hydroxyapatite (nano)

News Date
January 11, 2023

On January 11, 2023, EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) published the preliminary opinion on Hydroxyapatite as a nanomaterial. Public comments are sought by March 01, 2023. Hydroxyapatite commonly used as an abrasive, bulking, oral care and skin-conditioning agent in cosmetics. SCCS considers that the substance is safe when it is used at concentrations up to 10% in toothpaste, and up to 0.465% in mouthwash. Also, it is to be noted that this SCCS opinion is applicable on when the Hydroxyapatite nanomaterials are composed of rod-shaped particles of which at least 95.8% (in particle number) have an aspect ratio less than 3, and the remaining 4.2% have an aspect ratio not exceeding 4.9, and without any surface coat or structural modification.
