U.S. CPSC Urges Consumers to Immediately Stop Using and Safely Store Butterfly Express Essential Oils, Including Wintergreen, Birch and Other Blends, Due to Failure to Meet Child-Resistant Packaging Requirements; Risk of Poisoning

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is urging people to stop using certain essential oils from Butterfly Express right away. The Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA) says that because the products contain methyl salicylate, they must be in packaging that prevents children from getting hurt. Butterfly Express's packaging of the products that have been found to contain methyl salicylate is either not child-resistant or has not been properly tested according to the child packaging regulation. This means that young children could get sick if they swallow the products. The CPSC looked at Wintergreen, Birch, Le Sweet Relief, and Le EZ Traveler essential oils and found that all of them have more than 5% methyl salicylate, which means they need to be in special packaging (commonly referred to as child resistant and senior friendly packaging).
