EU seeks public input of Titanium Dioxide Safety in Oral Cosmetic Products

News Date
December 5, 2023

The European Commission for Safety and Health (SCCS) has evaluated the genotoxicity potential of various titanium dioxide (TiO2) grades used in oral cosmetic products. The SCCS considers most grades, except for two nano grades (RM09 and RM11), safe for use in oral-care products. However, more experimental data is needed to exclude the genotoxicity potential of other grades. The SCCS's approach to risk assessment differs from EFSA's, as cosmetic products are not meant for oral consumption. The SCCS cannot recommend safe concentration limits for TiO2 materials used in cosmetic products that could lead to oral or inhalation exposure. Further investigations are needed to exclude the risk from long-term repeated exposures of the oral mucosa to TiO2 nanoparticles.

Deadline for comments is on February 6,2024.
