EU SCCS Releases Preliminary Opinion on Children’s Exposure to Methyl Salicylate

The SCCS/1633/21 Opinion determined that Methyl Salicylate in toothpaste up to a maximum concentration of 2.52% is safe for children under the age of six. It is also safe for children aged 0 to 3 when used at 0.02% in all regulated cosmetic products, and for children aged 0.5 to 3 years when used at 0.02% in shower gel, hand soap, shampoo, body lotion, face cream, hand cream, and lip products. The maximum methyl salicylate content in toothpaste is 2.52%. The SCCS encourages stakeholders to provide feedback on the preliminary opinion, with a deadline of June 19, 2023. The final judgment will give important recommendations on the safe use of Methyl Salicylate in children's cosmetic products.
