Modern cosmetic industry trends like upcycling emphasise reusing by-products and cutting waste. The upcycling phenomena is being supported by consumers' increased awareness of the environmental impact and place of origin of cosmetic items.

The sustainability of the finished product is increased when these raw resources are transformed into goods that are more valuable or of higher quality. In fact, a number of often discarded agri-food by-products have attracted significant interest because of their high functionality and/or bioactivity value-added chemicals. Because it contains phenolic components including chlorogenic acids and caffeine, coffee is well known as a cosmetic ingredient. Due to its photoprotective and anti-aging qualities, as well as its lipolytic activity in cellulitis and hair regeneration, caffeine is commonly employed in cosmetic formulations.

Strong antioxidants with anti-aging and photoprotective properties are chlorogenic acids. These bioactive chemicals and other chemical features found in coffee byproducts, such as coffee beans, can give useful capabilities in cosmetic formulations. High-volume by-products of the coffee industry include discarded coffee grounds and coffee silver skin. Their usage in various cosmetic formulations has been studied, demonstrating their safety, acceptance, and ability to improve skin, supporting their value as innovative, natural, sustainable components for skincare products.
